Introducing Seed Milk 2.0
Many moons have passed since our founders Henry and Glyn made our delicious hemp cream for the first time, and many iterations of our hemp milk have since passed too. Fortunately many of these haven’t left the walls of our farm in Devon (it is a good thing, trust us), but every one that’s made its way into the hands of our customers we’re extremely proud of. This doesn’t mean, however, that we don’t believe that there’s room for improvement. We’re constantly striving to make everything we do the best it can be, and that’s why you’re here, reading about our new Seed Milk.
Why did you change the packaging?
This is probably the first change you’ll pick up on – the packaging is considerably more blue, well, teal to be specific. The old cartons were great and we’ll always hold them dear, they were the first products we wrote ‘nothing changes if nobody changes’ across. Unfortunately, they didn’t stand out much on the shelf and we’d often have people telling us they couldn’t find them. Problematic. We’ve therefore given them a makeover that should help them stand out a little bit better and shout about what makes the milk great.
What about inside the carton, is the milk different too?
Whilst the milk hasn’t changed colour like the carton, we have made some improvements. Back in 2018 we completely reformulated the milk, wanting to make it as natural as possible and consequently reducing it to 3 ingredients. We may have ticked the natural box, however we started to experience issues with consistency, some people found it would split in their coffee or tea. Again, problematic.
What are the new ingredients you’ve added?
We’ve introduced an acidity regulator (dipotassium phosphate) and emulsifier (sunflower lecithin) to improve how the milk performs. Dairy milk (ew) is naturally at the perfect acidity level to work in hot drinks, however plant ingredients have different physical properties and therefore need some help from an acidity regulator to make them perform in the same way.
As you probably learned in chemistry back in school, oils like to separate from water. Problematic for us as hemp seeds naturally contain oils. Emulsifiers like sunflower lecithin help to prevent this from happening, allowing the hemp oil to mix nicely with water, keeping your drinks nice and smooth.
Are the new ingredients safe?
Yep! Lecithin, a type of natural emulsifier, is a fatty substance that is found in our body as well as a variety of plant and animal species. We’ve opted to use sunflower lecithin as it’s GMO-free, plant-based and produced using more gentle extraction methods than other lecithins.
Dipotassium phosphate, whilst also safe to use in food, is a controlled ingredient as phosphates can be bad for you in very large quantities. The acceptable daily intake of phosphorous is around 40mg per kg of body weight per day, meaning around 2,800mg (or 2.8g) for an average adults weighing 70kg. Our hemp milk only contains around 3-6mg of dipotassium phosphate, and 1mg of naturally occurring phosphorous per 100ml. This means our hemp milk contains a maximum of 7mg of phosphorous per 100ml, drastically less than dairy milk (ew) which has over 100mg per 100ml! If you’re someone who follows a low phosphorus diet (if you have kidney disfunction for instance) then hemp milk is a great alternative.
Why have you reduced the amount of hemp seed in the milk?
Short answer: we haven’t. If you look at the back you’ll see the hemp seed base has reduced from 7% to 4%, but fear not, we’re actually still using the same amount of hemp! We’ve just optimised the process of making our hemp seed base, meaning it’s now more concentrated. So less base, but the same amount of hemp seed.
