8 Tasty and Healthy Hemp Seed Recipes

Have you ever entered an Instagram vortex? You get hooked on something and suddenly 20 minutes have passed and you’re still sitting on your bed, wondering where the hell the time went?

Well last week we discovered the hashtag #hempseedsoneverything and promptly entered the biggest Instagram vortex of our lives. This one simple hashtag says what we’ve been telling the world about hemp for the past 20 years: yes, you really can put #hempseedsoneverything.

And why wouldn’t you put hemp seeds on everything? Hemp seeds are naturally packed with nutrients including protein, omegas and fibre. A 30g serving of hemp seeds provides 100% of your recommended daily intake of omega-3 (more than flax or chia). The protein in hemp seeds is a pure plant protein and has all 20 essential amino acids including the 9 our body can’t produce for itself. Hemp seeds allow for a slow release of energy throughout the day, and most importantly they taste delicious – a bit like a cross between a sunflower seed and a pine nut.

In our vortex we saw so many creative ways you could create hemp seed recipes – blended into matcha lattes for extra froth, sprinkled on top of sautéed nectarines and made into crunchy hemp-seed balls. There were so many mums using them in kid-friendly hemp seed recipes that we decided to write a whole blog post about it. Here are eight simple yet creative hemp seed recipes – we hope you’ll soon be sprinkling them on, well, everything.

1. Hemp Seeds on Cereal

You can scatter hemp seeds on any cereal, though their light and nutty flavour works especially well with muesli and granola. We made this homemade granola with hemp seed recipe by roasting oats and hemp seeds along with dried fruits and apricots. Top it with Good Hemp’s dairy-free hemp drink for the perfect hemp-filled breakfast.

2) Hemp Chia Pudding

Pudding for breakfast? This hemp seed recipe is as good as it sounds. Chia is a great source of protein, omegas and fibre. When paired with our hemp seeds, this healthy breakfast really packs a punch.

3) Hemp Seed Pesto

Pesto is usually made with pine nuts, but why not try a seed filled version instead? This hemp blend works great on penne pasta, spread over a vegetarian tart or mixed in with root seed vegetables. See here for @naturalnourishment’s recipe.

4) Hemp Seeds in Smoothies

As we keep saying, you can pretty much throw hemp seeds on everything and smoothies are no exception. Blend them into your favourite shake for a deliciously nutty boost – this peanut butter blend makes a green drink delicious.

5) Hemp Seeds on Smoothie Bowls

It’s all well and good blending hemp seeds into your morning shake but if you’re trying to get an Instagram worthy snap then you’re better off delicately sprinkling them on top (nope, there really is no rest for the wicked). This deep-purple triple berry smoothie bowl is our dairy-free take on the Brazilian classic – it never fails to turn heads.

7) Hemp Seeds on Salads

Sprinkling hemp seeds on your salads is a great way to add extra nutrition and flavour to your lunch. The super seeds have got heaps of fibre so you’ll stay fuller for longer and the protein means a slow release of energy throughout the day. This healthy prawn salad recipe is one of our faves.

6) Hemp seeds on Toast

How do you like your toast? Smeared with nut butter, spread with avocado or topped with sautéed mushrooms? Whatever your preference, adding a sprinkle of hemp seeds on top is the way forward. Our go-to is avocado on rye, with a drizzle of Good Hemp Oil and a squeeze of lemon juice, topped with a hemp and fennel seed mix.

8) Hemp Seeds on Stir-fry

Chop some vegetables, garlic and chilli, then add rice noodles, throw in some soy sauce and you’ve got yourself the ultimate 10-minute meal. Sprinkle some hemp seeds on top for some plant-powered protein. Remind us what we did before the stir-fry came along?
